THE NUMERICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SYMBOL DISTRIBUTION IN A TEXT.
LEVIN, J.I.
THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE ORDERED DISTRIBUTION OF A GIVEN ITEM IN A TEXT. THE ELEMENT CONSIDERED MAY BE ANY DISCRETE ITEM OR SET OF ITEMS IN A TEXT, SUCH AS A PHONEME OR GROUP OF PHONEMES, A MORPHEME, SYNTACTIC CONSTRUCTION OR INTONATION PATTERN. THE AIM IS TO MEASURE NUMERICALLY HOW COMPACTLY (OR DIFFUSELY) THE ITEM IS DISTRIBUTED IN THE TEXT. THIS IS A QUESTION NOT OF THE USUAL PROBLEM IN LINGUISTIC STATISTICS, BUT OF THE NATURE OF ITS DISTRIBUTION--WHETHER ITS OCCURRENCE HAS A TENDENCY TO CONCENTRATION AT POINTS WHICH ARE WIDELY SEPARATED FROM EACH OTHER OR WHETHER IT IS UNIFORMLY DISPERSED IN THE TEXT. IN PART 1, MEASURES OF COMPACTNESS ARE INTRODUCED AND SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE CONCERNING THEIR USE. IN PART 2, THESE MEASURES ARE ILLUSTRATED BY APPLICATION TO SENTENCES, WORDS (IN THIS CASE MORHPEMES AND GROUPS OF MORPHEMES), PHONEMES, AND A METRICAL FORM--THE FOUR-STROPHE IAMB. THIS 28-PAGE ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE SOVIET LINGUISTIC PERIODICAL "VOPROSY JAZYKOZNANIJA," NUMBER 6, 1967. SINGLE COPIES OF THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION ARE AVAILABLE FOR $2.04 FROM LINCS, CENTER FOR APPLIED LINGUISTICS, 1717 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE, WASHINGTON, D.C. 20036. (AUTHOR/DO)
