ENGLISH NOUN INFLECTION AND RELATED MATTERS FROM A GENERATIVE SEMANTIC POINT OF VIEW.
CHAFE, WALLACE L.
THIS PAPER DEALS WITH THE SEMANTIC PHENOMENA WHICH UNDERLIE THE SURFACE STRUCTURE OCCURRENCE (OR NONOCCURRENCE) IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF ENGLISH NOUNS OF SUCH ITEMS AS THE DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE ARTICLES AND THE PLURAL SUFFIX. THE INFLECTION OF ENGLISH NOUNS IS DISCUSSED IN SEMANTIC TERMS. RULES ARE GIVEN FOR THE GENERATION OF THESE INFLECTIONS IN SEMANTIC STRUCTURE, AND FOR THEIR SUBSEQUENT CONVERSION INTO SURFACE STRUCTURE. SOME RELATED SEMANTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ADJECTIVES AND QUANTIFIERS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. THE PAPER SEEKS TO DEMONSTRATE THAT A DESCRIPTION OF A LANGUAGE IN THESE TERMS IS NOT ONLY POSSIBLE, BUT ALSO MORE REVEALING THAN A DESCRIPTION IN TERMS OF GENERATIVE SYNTAX. (AUTHOR/AMM)
