THIS FIELD REPORT ANALYZES THE CONFLICT WHICH DEVELOPED IN A SMALL TENNESSEE TOWN IN 1956 OVER EFFORTS TO DESEGREGATE THE SCHOOLS. ALONG WITH BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE COMMUNITY, THE REPORT CONTAINS (1) A CHRONOLOGY OF THE EVENTS, (2) A DISCUSSION OF THE OPINIONS AND ATTITUDES OF THE COMMUNITY ABOUT RACE RELATIONS, DESEGREGATION, AND VIOLENCE AND MOB RULE, (3) A DESCRIPTION OF THE ROLE OF THE PRESS, CIVIC OFFICIALS, LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS IN THE DESEGREGATION CRISIS, AND (4) A REVIEW OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SMALL NEGRO COMMUNITY AND ITS ACTIONS IN THE DESEGREGATION ATTEMPTS.
