COMMUNICATIONS, THE TRANSFER OF MEANING.
FABUN, DON
THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHS, CHARTS, AND ILLUSTRATIONS, THE DIFFICULTIES OF COMMUNICATION ARE PRESENTED IN THIS BOOK. TOPICS CONSIDERED FIRST ARE THE RECEIVING AND EVALUATING OF SENSORY EXPERIENCE, AND THE TRANSLATING OF THIS EXPERIENCE INTO SYMBOLS, INTO THE SILENT LANGUAGES OF TIME, COLOR, AND SPACE, AND INTO COMMON WORDS. THE EMPHASIS IS THEN SHIFTED TO PEOPLE AND THEIR TENDENCY TO ASSUME THAT THEY ARE GIVING OR RECEIVING INFORMATION WHEN IN ACTUALITY THEY ARE NOT ADEQUATELY QUALIFYING THEIR STATEMENTS. AMONG THE TOPICS CONSIDERED ARE THE TENDENCY OF LISTENERS AND SPEAKERS TO MAKE FALSE INFERENCES, TO IGNORE THE TEMPORAL FRAMEWORK OF ANY FACT, AND TO OVERGENERALIZE. OTHER DIFFICULTIES DISCUSSED ARE THE LANGUAGE'S GRAVITATION TOWARD "EITHER-OR" CHOICES AND THE UNQUALIFIED EQUIVALENCE OF "IS." A FINAL CHAPTER PRESENTS A CHECKLIST OF QUESTIONS THAT CAN IMPROVE COMMUNICATIONS, AND A SHORT ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY IS APPENDED. (THIS BOOK IS AVAILABLE, FOR $0.95, FROM COLLIER-MACMILLAN DISTRIBUTION CENTER, FRONT AND BROWN STREETS, RIVERSIDE, NEW JERSEY, 08075, ORDER NO. 47749.) (LH)
