THIS GUIDE WAS DEVELOPED FOR USE WITH THE ELEMENTARY SCIENCE STUDY UNIT ON "BONES.""BONES" HAS BEEN TAUGHT IN THE FOURTH GRADE AND REQUIRES FROM 10 TO 25 LESSONS, DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF ACTIVITIES USED. THE GUIDE DOES NOT PROVIDE DETAILED INSTRUCTION FOR CONDUCTING CLASSES, BUT RATHER SOME POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES, AND LEAVES THE DAY-TO-DAY PROCEDURES TO THE TEACHER'S DISCRETION. THE ACTIVITIES ARE DIVIDED INTO FIVE CATEGORIES. THE FIRST INVOLVES AN ASSORTMENT OF BONES (MYSTERY BONES) FROM DIFFERENT ANIMALS WHICH THE CHILDREN EXAMINE, IDENTIFY, AND COMPARE. NUMBER 2 HAS THE CHILDREN ASSEMBLING A SKELETON FROM A PILE OF LOOSE BONES. NUMBER 3 INVOLVES MAKING A SKELETON FROM BONES THE CHILDREN HAVE PREPARED. FOUR UTILIZES ACTIVITIES WHICH DEVELOP CONCEPTS OF THE WAY BONES MOVE. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH DISSECTION, SKELETAL EXAMINATION, AND OBSERVATIONS OF THEIR OWN MOVEMENT. NUMBER 5 DEVELOPS ACTIVITIES AROUND THE "BONE PICTURE BOOK," A SEPARATE PUBLICATION PREPARED FOR USE WITH THE UNIT. NUMEROUS PHOTOGRAPHS AND DRAWINGS ARE PROVIDED TO ASSIST THE TEACHER IN ADVANCED PLANNING AND FOR USE WITH THE DAILY ACTIVITIES. REFERENCES, DESCRIPTIVE MATERIAL, AND INFORMATION FOR OBTAINING BONES ARE PROVIDED. A SECTION CONTAINING ILLUSTRATIONS SHOWING THE LOCATION OF BEEF CUTS, THE PRINCIPAL BONES IN THE HUMAN SKELETON, AND THE SCIENTIFIC, COMMON, AND BUTCHER'S NAMES FOR BONES IS INCLUDED.
