SPATIAL VISUALIZATION ABILITIES OF CENTRAL WASHINGTON STATE COLLEGE PROSPECTIVE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS.

INVESTIGATED WAS THE EXTENT TO WHICH STUDENTS COMPLETING PLANNED MATHEMATICS EDUCATION PROGRAMS (1) WERE PROFICIENT IN SPATIAL VISUALIZATION ABILITIES, AND (2) HAD DEVELOPED MATHEMATICAL UNDERSTANDINGS. THE EFFECTS OF THE MATHEMATICS CURRICULA UPON SUCH DEVELOPMENT WERE INVESTIGATED BY COMPARING GROUP MEAN TEST SCORES OF PROSPECTIVE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY MATHEMATICS TEACHERS WITH THOSE PLANNING TEACHING CAREERS IN (1) SOCIAL SCIENCES, (2) ENGLISH, (3) SCIENCE, (4) ART AND INDUSTRIAL ARTS, AND WITH SUCH OTHER GROUPS AS FRESHMEN MATHEMATICS STUDENTS, EXPERIENCED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS, AND EXPERIENCED SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS. RESULTS OF THE STUDY ALLOWED THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS TO BE REACHED--(1) SPATIAL VISUALIZATION ABILITIES (SVA) OF PROSPECTIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS DIFFERED SIGNIFICANTLY FROM ABILITIES OF EXPERIENCED TEACHERS, (2) SVA OF PROSPECTIVE SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS DIFFERED SIGNIFICANTLY FROM SVA ABILITIES OF PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS IN OTHER AREAS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ARTS, INDUSTRIAL ARTS, AND SCIENCE TEACHERS, (3) PROSPECTIVE SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS HAD A SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER DEGREE OF SVA THAN DID PROSPECTIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS, (4) MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT CAN BE USED AS A VALID INDEX OF SVA, AND (5) THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DEPENDENCE OF SVA ON ACADEMIC ABILITY.
