THIS GUIDE IS DESIGNED FOR USE IN PLANNING AND TEACHING THE SCIENCE CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT STUDY (SCIS) UPPER ELEMENTARY GRADE UNIT "POSITION AND MOTION". GENERAL INFORMATION INCLUDES (1) A UNIT OVERVIEW, (2) BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON POSITION AND MOTION CONCEPTS, (3) PLANNING AND TEACHING SUGGESTIONS, AND (4) AN EQUIPMENT LIST. THE UNIT IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE PARTS--(1) POLAR COORDINATES, (2) REFERENCE DIRECTIONS, (3) RECTANGULAR COORDINATES, (4) OBJECTS IN MOTION, AND (5) COLLISION EXPERIMENTS. EACH PART IS DIVIDED INTO SEVERAL CHAPTERS. GIVEN FOR EACH PART ARE (1) A STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES, (2) BACKGROUND INFORMATION, AND (3) A GENERAL OVERVIEW. PROVIDED FOR EACH CHAPTER ARE (1) EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS LISTS, (2) SUGGESTIONS FOR ADVANCED PREPARATIONS, AND (3) TEACHING SUGGESTIONS INCLUDING RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE HANDLING OF SPECIFIC STUDENT ACTIVITIES. THE OVERALL STRUCTURE OF THE UNIT FOLLOWS A CYCLE OF PRELIMINARY EXPLORATION, INVENTION OF SPECIFIC CONCEPTS RELATED TO REFERENCE FRAMES, AND DISCOVERY OF THE USEFULNESS OF THE CONCEPT.
