THE RELATION OF VARIOUS TEACHER AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS TO SELECTED LEARNINGS OF NINTH-GRADE SCIENCE PUPILS.
SHEPPARD, MOSES MAURICE
RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ENVIRONMENTAL AND TEACHER CHARACTERISTICS AND STUDENT LEARNING IN NINTH GRADE SCIENCE ARE INVESTIGATED. NINETY-THREE NINTH GRADE SCIENCE CLASSES WERE SELECTED FROM THOSE TAUGHT IN NORTH CAROLINA. STUDENTS WERE PRETESTED IN THE FALL AND POST-TESTED IN THE SPRING FOR SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT, UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCIENTIFIC ENTERPRISE, AND CRITICAL THINKING ABILITY. DATA RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND TEACHER CHARACTERISTICS WERE OBTAINED FROM QUESTIONNAIRES AND STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION RECORDS. DATA ANALYSIS INVOLVED ANALYSIS OF COVARIANCE. STUDENTS WHO HAD SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER POST-TEST SCORES WERE ENROLLED IN SCHOOLS WHICH HAD (1) MORE NINTH GRADE SCIENCE CLASSES, (2) FEWER PUPILS PER SCIENCE CLASS, (3) STUDENT TEACHERS, (4) FEWER DROPOUTS, AND (5) HIGH PERCENTAGES OF GRADUATES ATTENDING COLLEGE. THE TEACHERS OF THESE STUDENTS (1) HAD FEWER NON-SCIENCE CLASSES, (2) HAD FEWER DAILY TEACHING PREPARATIONS, (3) HAD MORE AND VARIED COLLEGE SCIENCE PREPARATION WITH MAJORS IN SCIENCE OR SCIENCE EDUCATION, AND (4) WERE INTERESTED IN SCIENCE.
