AN ASSESSMENT OF THE SUCCESS OF C AVERAGE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES IN GRAND RAPIDS JUNIOR COLLEGE.
WILLIAMS, ROBERT A.
IN THE FALL SEMESTER 1961 AT GRAND RAPIDS JUNIOR COLLEGE, MICHIGAN, ALL FRESHMEN WHOSE HIGH SCHOOL GRADE AVERAGES WERE BETWEEN 1.5 AND 2.5 WERE ENROLLED IN A GENERAL STUDIES CURRICULUM. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE RECORDS OF 398 SUCH STUDENTS SHOWED LOW CORRELATIONS BETWEEN FIRST SEMESTER COLLEGE GRADES AND SCORES ON MEASURES OF SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE, READING, MECHANICS OF ENGLISH, AND MOTIVATION. WHILE SOME CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS WERE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT, THEY WERE TOO SMALL TO BE PRACTICAL FOR PREDICTION. INTERVIEWS OF 11 SELECTED STUDENTS REVEALED THE RELATIONSHIP OF COLLEGE SUCCESS TO PEER GROUP AND FAMILY GROUP EXPECTATIONS. THIS PH.D. DISSERTATION IS AVAILABLE AS DOCUMENT NO. 64-7556 FOR $2.75 (MICROFILM) OR $4.00 (XEROGRAPHIC COPY) FROM UNIVERSITY MICROFILMS, INC., P.O. BOX 1346, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN 48106. (WO)
