A STUDY OF THE FORMAL PREPARATION OF ACADEMIC TEACHERS IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES WITH PROPOSALS FOR OREGON.
LOOMIS, WILLIAM GEORGE
QUESTIONNAIRES SENT TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE ADMINISTRATORS, STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS, AND REGIONAL ACCREDITING ASSOCIATIONS IN 13 WESTERN STATES, ASKED FOR OPINIONS ON THE BEST PREPARATION FOR TEACHERS IN JUNIOR COLLEGES. FROM THE RESULTS, THE AUTHOR MADE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PREPARING SUCH TEACHERS IN OREGON. ALL SUCH DECISIONS DEPEND ON THE ALLOCATION OF RESPONSIBILITY, LEGISLATIVE OR EXECUTIVE, BETWEEN LOCAL AND STATE CONTROL. SIXTY-FOUR OF THE 77 ADMINISTRATORS, ALL 13 STATE DEPARTMENTS, AND 12 OF THE 17 ACCREDITATION OFFICIALS ANSWERED. THE ADMINISTRATORS FAVORED AN INCREASE IN DEGREE REQUIREMENTS AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS, AND A REDUCTION IN EDUCATION COURSE REQUIREMENTS. THEY NAMED SIX PREPARATORY FUNCTIONS FOR THE UNIVERSITY, FOUR FOR THE STATE DEPARTMENTS, AND THREE FOR THE ACCREDITATION ASSOCIATIONS. THEY FELT THAT THE UNIQUE QUALITIES OF THE ACADEMIC TEACHER SHOULD BE BETTER DEVELOPED. THE STATE AND ACCREDITATION OFFICIALS' REPLIES DIFFERED FROM THE ADMINISTRATORS' MAINLY IN DETAIL AND POINTS OF EMPHASIS. SIX RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR OREGON FOR THE PREPARATION OF ITS PUBLIC JUNIOR COLLEGE ACADEMIC TEACHERS. THIS ED.D. DISSERTATION IS AVAILABLE AS DOCUMENT NO. 65-1263, FOR $3.65 (MICROFILM) OR $12.85 (XEROGRAPHIC COPY) FROM UNIVERSITY MICROFILMS, INC., P.O. BOX 1346, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN 48106. (HH)
