PROGRAMMED INSTRUCTION IN WEST AFRICA AND THE ARAB STATES, A REPORT ON TWO TRAINING WORKSHOPS. EDUCATIONAL STUDIES AND DOCUMENTS, NO. 52.
KOMOSKI, P. KENNETH; GREEN, EDWARD J.
DURING THE SUMMER OF 1963 NINETEEN PERSONS IN RAMALLAH, JORDAN AND THIRTY-SEVEN PERSONS IN IBADAN, NIGERIA TOOK A SIX WEEK TRAINING WORKSHOP COURSE IN PROGRAMED INSTRUCTION. THE COURSE CONSISTED OF LECTURES, GROUP DISCUSSIONS, READING ASSIGNMENTS, INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCES, PROGRAM WRITING, EDITING, AND STUDENT TRIALS. THE TRAINEES MADE COMMENDABLE PROGRESS IN PROGRAMING, BUT NOT TO THE POINT WHERE THEY COULD BE EXPECTED TO CARRY THE BURDEN OF TRAINING OTHERS IN PROGRAMED INSTRUCTION. METHODS USED IN EVALUATING THE RESULTS OF THE TWO WORKSHOPS WERE QUITE DIFFERENT. THE JORDANIAN WORKSHOP WAS EVALUATED INTERNALLY BY THE STAFF AND PARTICIPANTS, WHILE THE NIGERIAN WORKSHOP WAS EVALUATED EXTERNALLY BY UNESCO AND THE REGIONAL EDUCATION MINISTRIES OF NIGERIA. FOR FUTURE WORKSHOPS IN NEW COUNTRIES IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE STAFF-PARTICIPANT RATIO BE FIVE-TO-ONE OR LESS AND THAT THE WORKSHOP BE EXTENDED FROM SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION BY WILBUR SCHRAMM TO THE CONCEPT OF PROGRAMED INSTRUCTION PRECEDES THE REPORT. APPENDICES INCLUDE THE WORKSHOP EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE AND THE REPORT OF THE EVALUATION COMMITTEE. THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE FROM UNESCO, PLACE DE FONTENOY, PARIS-7E, FRANCE. (RS)
