THIS STUDY INVOLVED--(1) EXPLORING ACADEMIC MOTIVATIONAL FACTORS IN PUERTO RICAN 11TH-GRADE STUDENTS, (2) CREATING A MEASURE FOR THESE FACTORS WHICH MIGHT BE USABLE IN OTHER LATIN AMERICAN AREAS, AND (3) INVESTIGATING THE CHILD-REARING AND OTHER PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTORS RELATED TO ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. THE METHOD INVOLVED THREE STAGES--(1) IDENTIFYING UNDER- AND OVER-ACHIEVERS IN A REPRESENTATIVE GROUP OF 11TH GRADERS IN PUERTO RICO, (2) STUDYING THE NON-INTELLECTUAL FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH THE USE OF ATTITUDE SCALES AND MATERNAL INTERVIEWS, AND (3) DETERMINING VALID CONSTRUCTS RELATED TO MOTIVATIONAL DISCREPANCIES. SOME OF THE MAJOR CONCLUSIONS ARE--(1) THERE ARE ONLY A FEW SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MOTHERS OF OVER- AND UNDER-ACHIEVERS, (2) MALES REVEAL NEGATIVE FEELINGS TOWARD SCHOOL WHEREAS FEMALES IDENTIFY WITH SCHOOL AND SEE IT AS A VEHICLE FOR SOCIAL MOBILITY, AND (3) THE INSTRUMENTS USED PREDICT MALE ACHIEVEMENT BEST.
