AN EXPLANATION OF THE STATUS OF URDU, ONE OF THE TWO OFFICIAL LANGUAGES OF PAKISTAN, AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO HINDI PREFACES THIS URDU LANGUAGE TEXT. PREPARED AS A TWO-SEMESTER INTRODUCTORY COURSE FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF WRITTEN URDU, THIS FIRST VOLUME CONSISTS OF (1) A SECTION ON PHONOLOGY, SUPPLEMENTED BY TAPES, (2) A SECTION ON THE SCRIPT, WHICH IS A MODIFIED FORM OF THE ARABIC SCRIPT CONTAINING SOME PERSIAN INNOVATIONS AS WELL AS SOME OF ITS OWN FOR SOUNDS PECULIAR TO URDU, (3) A "SKELETON" GRAMMAR, AND (4) AN URDU-ENGLISH GLOSSARY WITH THE URDU APPEARING IN BOTH URDU SCRIPT AND TRANSCRIPTION.
