A SHORT BENGALI-ENGLISH, ENGLISH-BENGALI DICTIONARY.
DABBS, JACK AUTREY
THIS COLLOCATED DICTIONARY CONSISTS OF 2028 ENTRIES IN THE BENGALI-ENGLISH SECTION AND 1648 ENTRIES IN THE ENGLISH-BENGALI SECTION. DESIGNED FOR THE BEGINNING STUDENT OF BENGALI, IT REPRESENTS MOST OF THE VOCABULARY NEEDED FOR EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES, WITH USEFUL PHRASES GIVEN AS EXAMPLES OF THE MORE IMPORTANT ENTRY WORDS. THE PRONUNCIATION IS BASED ON THE GENERAL LANGUAGE OF EDUCATED EAST PAKISTANIS. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE VOCABULARY OF EAST PAKISTAN (EAST BENGAL) AND WEST BENGAL (THE CALCUTTA AREA) ARE INDICATED. A SPECIAL FEATURE IS THE USE OF A PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION (MODIFIED SMITH-TRAGER) FOR THE BENGALI WORDS, WHICH ENABLES THE READER WHO HAS NOT LEARNED THE BENGALI ALPHABET TO LOOK UP AND ASCERTAIN THE MEANINGS OF WORDS HE HEARS. AN EXPLANATION OF THE TRANSCRIPTION SYSTEM IS PRESENTED IN THE INTRODUCTION. APPENDIXES LIST CARDINAL NUMERALS AND A VERB PARADIGM SHOWING THE MAIN TENSE STRUCTURE OF THE BENGALI VERB. THIS DICTIONARY IS PUBLISHED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES, A. AND M. COLLEGE OF TEXAS, COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS 77843. (AMM)
