PROGRAMED LEARNING IN VIETNAMESE--CONSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION OF A SHORT PRACTICAL LANGUAGE COURSE.
FIKS, ALFRED I.; DINH VAN BAN
THE GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT (WORK UNIT MALT) WAS TWOFOLD--(1) TO DEVELOP A SHORT, SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL COURSE IN VIETNAMESE THAT WOULD BE RELEVANT TO JOB REQUIREMENTS, AND (2) TO ASSESS THE TRAINING VALUE OF THE COURSE BY OBSERVING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT RESULTING FROM IT. IN ACCORDANCE WITH MATA (MILITARY ASSISTANCE TRAINING ADVISOR) JOB ELEMENTS OF ADVISING, ASSISTING, RAPPORT ESTABLISHMENT, INTERPRETER CONTROL, AND SURVIVAL, THE COURSE IS LIMITED TO UNDERSTANDING AND SPEAKING SKILLS, A BASIC PROFICIENCY LEVEL, AND JOB-RELEVANT CONTENT. THE PROGRAM, WHICH IS CONTAINED IN 50 TAPED LESSONS, COMBINES PROGRAMED LEARNING, AUDIOLINGUAL PRACTICE, AND ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS. IN THE COURSE EVALUATION, 19 MATA OFFICERS SERVED AS STUDENTS IN THE MALT PROGRAM IN LIEU OF RECEIVING MATA CLASSROOM-BASED VIETNAMESE INSTRUCTION. TIME REQUIRED FOR COMPLETION RANGED FROM 45 TO 150 HOURS. ACHIEVEMENT WAS EVALUATED BY MEANS OF FOUR CRITERION MEASURES--(1) MALT COMPREHENSION AND SPEAKING TEST SCORES, (2) ARMY LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST SCORES, (3) A STUDENT ATTITUDE SCORE, AND (4) A MEASURE OF TRANSFER EFFECTS TO SUBSEQUENT LANGUAGE TRAINING. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING--(1) IT IS FEASIBLE TO BUILD A BASIC, SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM IN A TONAL LANGUAGE, EMPHASIZING JOB-ORIENTED CONTENT AND SKILLS, AND REQUIRING ONLY A TAPE RECORDER AND A POWER SOURCE FOR UTILIZATION. (2) STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT FROM SUCH A PROGRAM IS SATISFACTORY. STUDENTS HAVE POSITIVE ATTITUDINAL REACTIONS TOWARD THE MATERIAL. (3) HIGHER APTITUDE STUDENTS LEARN MORE OF THE MALT COURSE IN LESS TIME THAN LOWER APTITUDE STUDENTS. (4) MORE ADVANCED VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE TRAINING IS NOT ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY PRIOR EXPOSURE TO THE MALT PROGRAM. (5) THE MALT VIETNAMESE PROGRAM MAY BE A USEFUL MODEL FOR SIMILAR TRAINING REQUIREMENTS IN OTHER LANGUAGES.
