AN APPRAISAL OF THE TRAVELING SCIENCE DEMONSTRATION LECTURE PROGRAM IN OREGON AND ITS EFFECTIVENESS AS AN AGENT FOR IN-SERVICE EDUCATION.
BOGEN, GERALD KEITH
THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE TRAVELING SCIENCE DEMONSTRATORS TO THE PROFESSIONAL GROWTH OF THE TEACHERS CONTACTED WERE STUDIED. TWO QUESTIONNAIRES WERE CONSTRUCTED TO MEASURE THE IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM. A "TEACHER-VISITED" QUESTIONNAIRE WAS SENT TO 415 PERSONS VISITED BY A DEMONSTRATOR, AND A SECOND QUESTIONNAIRE WAS MAILED TO ELEVEN DEMONSTRATORS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PROGRAM--(1) STIMULATED INTEREST AND SPREAD THE INFLUENCE OF COMPETENT TEACHERS OF SCIENCE, (2) ENCOURAGED THE BUILDING OF SIMPLE LABORATORY APPARATUS IN SMALLER AND POORLY EQUIPPED HIGH SCHOOLS, AND (3) PROVIDED SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH A DEEPER APPRECIATION OF SCIENCE AND MOTIVATION TO ENTER SCIENCE CAREERS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE STRUCTURE, OPERATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED AN EFFECTIVE INSERVICE EDUCATION AGENT FOR PARTICIPATING SCIENCE TEACHERS IN THE STATE OF OREGON.
