TRADITIONAL PRACTICES IN A PRAGMATIC INSTITUTION.
RICHARDSON, RICHARD C.
WHILE THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS ESSENTIALLY PRAGMATIC IN ITS BASIC OUTLOOK, IT IS CLOSELY RELATED TO TRADITIONAL ASPECTS OF HIGHER EDUCATION. THESE EXTREME POSITIONS MUST BE AVOIDED AS THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE DEVELOPS A CONSISTENT FRAME OF REFERENCE FOR GUIDING POLICY DECISIONS. THE BASIC CONCEPT OF THE COLLEGE SUFFERS WHEN THE INSTITUTION BECOMES MERELY A COMMUNITY STATUS SYMBOL OF HIGHER EDUCATION OR WHEN THE INSTITUTION IS EVALUATED AGAINST THE NORM OF CURRENT PRACTICE. CONFLICTS BETWEEN THE TRADITIONAL AND LIBERAL FORCES AFFECT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE WITH RESPECT TO ITS STUDENT SERVICES, ITS CURRICULUM, ITS RELATIONSHIP TO ITS FACULTY, AND ITS ADMISSION POLICIES. CAUTION IS NEEDED SO THAT INSTRUMENTALLY DERIVED VALUES ARE NEITHER ACCEPTED AS ABSOLUTES NOR CONSIDERED AS ENDS IN THEMSELVES. THIS SPEECH WAS DELIVERED AT THE ANNUAL JUNIOR COLLEGE-UNIVERSITY ARTICULATION CONFERENCE (7TH, URBANA, ILLINOIS, FEBRUARY 15-16, 1968). (WO)
