CHILDREN OF POVERTY--CHILDREN OF AFFLUENCE.
LEWIS, HYLAN; AND OTHERS
THE CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS PUBLICATION EXAMINE HYPOTHESES ABOUT FAMILY LIFE AND SOCIETAL PRESSURES AND THEIR EFFECTS ON THE CHILDREN OF THE RICH AND POOR. PROFESSOR HYLAN LEWIS FOCUSES HIS ATTENTION ON THE INTERRELATION OF ETHNICITY, RACE, AND POVERTY, PARTICULARLY THE RELATED ISSUES OF ONE-PARENT FAMILIES, FAMILY PLANNING, AND THE GUARANTEED INCOME. THE CHANGING, COMPLEX, AND OFTEN CONTRADICTORY WORLD THAT YOUNG PEOPLE FIND THEMSELVES IN, AND THE PROBLEMS THIS PRESENTS TO THEM AND TO THE LARGER SOCIETY ARE DISCUSSED BY DR. ELI GINZBURG AND SENATOR ROBERT KENNEDY. THE FINAL SECTION IS A DIALOGUE BETWEEN NOTED EDUCATORS AND SOCIOLOGISTS. ITS BASIC THEME IS THE PROBLEM OF COMMUNICATION, INCLUDING THE INABILITY OF TEACHERS TO UNDERSTAND THE LIFE SITUATIONS OF THEIR STUDENTS, THE IMPOVERISHMENT OF THE QUALITY OF FAMILY LIFE OF THE BLUE COLLAR WORKER, AND THE LACK OF MEANINGFUL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MIDDLE CLASS PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN. THESE PAPERS WERE PRESENTED AT THE 43RD ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE CHILD STUDY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (NEW YORK, NEW YORK, MARCH 6, 1967). THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE FOR $2.45 FROM THE CHILD STUDY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, 9 EAST 89TH STREET, NEW YORK, NEW YORK 10028. (CG)
