INFORMAL ADULT EDUCATION BY ORGANIZATIONS, AGENCIES, AND CHURCHES IN THE NORTHEAST JOHNSON COUNTY COMMUNITY.
KAY, MARION E.
A SURVEY WAS MADE OF INFORMAL ADULT EDUCATION BY AGENCIES, ORGANIZATIONS, AND CHURCHES IN NORTHEAST JOHNSON COUNTY, KANSAS (PART OF GREATER KANSAS CITY). RECREATION, LEADERSHIP TRAINING, HUMAN RELATIONS, ACADEMIC SUBJECTS, CREATIVE ARTS, PUBLIC AFFAIRS, AND BIBLE STUDY AND RELIGIOUS TRAINING WERE THE LEADING PROGRAM AREAS. ALL GROUPS BUT ONE CHOSE COURSES BY MEMBER DECISIONS. TEACHER REQUIREMENTS STRESSED PROFICIENCY RATHER THAN COLLEGE DEGREES, AND TRAINING WAS LARGELY THROUGH THE ORGANIZATIONS THEMSELVES. STUDY GROUPS AND WORKSHOPS WERE THE PRINCIPAL EDUCATIONAL METHODS, PROGRAMS AVERAGED EIGHT TO 15 WEEKS IN LENGTH, AND 80 TO 95 PERCENT OF THOSE ENROLLED IN CLASSES COMPLETED THEM. FEES AND MEMBERS' DUES WERE THE CHIEF MEANS OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT IN MOST ORGANIZATIONS. FIVE AGENCIES REPORTED HAVING COUNSELING SERVICES. MAILINGS AND MASS MEDIA WERE USED FOR PUBLICITY. FORMAL CERTIFICATES OR DIPLOMAS, REGULAR RECORDS, AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS WERE RARE. (THE DOCUMENT INCLUDES APPENDIXES AND 15 REFERENCES.) THIS M.S. THESIS IS AVAILABLE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS, LAWRENCE. 98 PAGES. (LY)
