FIFTY-THREE REPRESENTATIVES FROM GOVERNMENT, BUSINESS, AND INDUSTRY PARTICIPATED IN THREE CONFERENCES TO DISCUSS PRESENT AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OFFICE OCCUPATIONS AND TO REVIEW A SYNTHESIS OF ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR OFFICE JOBS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THE SYNTHESIS, MADE BY THE BUREAU OF BUSINESS EDUCATION, UTILIZED RESULTS OF TWO PROCEDURES--(1) JOB DESCRIPTIONS FOR STENOGRAPHERS, CLERK-TYPISTS, AND GENERAL OFFICE CLERKS WERE GATHERED FROM THE STATE PERSONNEL BOARD, OTHER GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, AND BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY, AND (2) THE DESCRIPTIONS WERE ANALYZED TO DETERMINE THE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES NEEDED, DUTIES PERFORMED, PERSONALITY TRAITS AND ATTITUDES NEEDED, WORK HABITS AND GROOMING DESIRED, AND SPEED REQUIREMENTS IN SHORTHAND AND TYPEWRITING. SUMMARIES OF REMARKS BY WESLEY SMITH AND R.C. WAGENEN AND COMMENTS OF CONFEREES ON (1) JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN ENTRY OFFICE JOBS, (2) APPLICATION BLANKS, JOB INTERVIEWS, REQUIREMENTS, AND PREPARATION, AND (3) PERSONALITY TRAITS, ATTITUDES, WORK HABITS, AND GROOMING ARE INCLUDED. CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS AGREED THAT THERE WERE JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ENTRY OFFICE JOBS AND THAT THE BUREAU'S SYNTHESIS OF JOB DESCRIPTIONS WAS VERY COMPLETE. OBSERVATIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS, AND PLANS OF THE BUREAU CONCERNED THE NEED FOR FUNDAMENTALS, CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT, JOB-ORIENTED COURSE SEQUENCES, SPECIFIC COURSES, TESTS, STANDARDS, ADVISORY COMMITTEES, AND ADDITIONAL WORKSHOPS.
