POETRY IN THE ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM.
ARNSTEIN, FLORA J.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS BOOK ARE TO DEAL WITH PROBLEMS POSED BY THE TEACHING OF POETRY ON THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LEVEL AND TO HELP PROVIDE TEACHERS WITH CONFIDENCE IN THEIR ABILITY TO HANDLE SUCH TEACHING. QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW TO INTEREST CHILDREN IN POETRY, HOW TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO WRITE POETRY, AND HOW TO COMPENSATE FOR AN INSUFFICIENT BACKGROUND IN POETRY BEFORE TEACHING IT ARE TREATED. EXAMPLES OF POETRY WRITTEN BY CHILDREN AND QUOTATIONS FROM THEIR OWN COMMENTS ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE THAT CHILDREN ARE NOT ANTIPATHETIC TO POETRY, NOR IS POETRY FORBIDDING TO TEACH. CHAPTERS PROVIDE DISCUSSIONS ON THE REASONS FOR TEACHING POETRY, THE SELECTION AND SOURCES OF APPROPRIATE POEMS, THE ATTITUDES OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TOWARD POETRY, THE ENJOYMENT OF POETRY, THE PROCESS OF LEARNING TO WRITE POETRY, AND THE RECOGNITION OF AUTHENTIC POETIC EXPRESSION IN CHILDREN'S POEMS. (THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED BY APPLETON-CENTURY-CROFTS, NEW YORK, $2.95.) (MM)
