THE ACALANES UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT ENGLISH CURRICULUM FOR GRADES 9-12 ATTEMPTS TO GIVE UNITY AND SEQUENCE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF LANGUAGE SKILLS AND CONCEPTS BY MAKING THE STUDY OF LANGUAGE THE CORE DISCIPLINE, INTEGRATING IT WITH COMPOSITION AND LITERATURE STUDIES. EACH PART OF THE CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO COMPLIMENT AND REINFORCE THE OTHERS. COMPOSITION IS VIEWED AS THE STUDENT'S MANIFESTATION OF WHAT HE HAS LEARNED IN LANGUAGE STUDIES, AND LITERATURE REPRESENTS THE EXISTENT MANIFESTATION OF THE BEST IN LANGUAGE MANIPULATION AND USAGE. SEQUENCE AND INTEGRATION ARE FURTHER REALIZED BY THE "SPIRAL" DESIGN OF THE CURRICULUM IN WHICH SKILLS, PRACTICES, AND CONCEPTS IN LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, AND COMPOSITION ARE INTRODUCED, THEN REINFORCED IN GREATER DEPTH AND COMPLEXITY IN SUCCEEDING GRADES. TO MAKE THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAM WORKABLE, ADDENDA FOR THE THREE AREAS OF ENGLISH ARE PROVIDED. THE SUPPLEMENT ON LANGUAGE PROVIDES SUGGESTIONS FOR CLASS DISCUSSIONS AND EXERCISES IN THE AREAS OF HISTORY OF THE LANGUAGE, SEMANTICS, USAGE, AND SYNTACTICAL ANALYSIS. ALSO INCLUDED IS THE ARTICLE ENTITLED "REVOLUTION IN GRAMMAR" BY W. NELSON FRANCIS. THE COMPOSITION ADDENDA CONTAINS TEACHING SUGGESTIONS AND STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS FOR--(1) COMPOSITIONS OF DESCRIPTION, EXPOSITION, AND PERSUASION, (2) FORM OF LIBRARY PAPERS, (3) DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE POINTS OF VIEW, (4) STYLE OF WRITING, AND (5) TYPES OF PARAGRAPH ORGANIZATION. JOSEPHINE MILES' ESSAY, "THE USE OF REASON," IS REPRINTED. THE LITERATURE ADDENDA CONSISTS OF SUGGESTED TITLES FOR CLASS USE ARRANGED BY GRADE LEVEL AND GENRE, STUDY GUIDES, REFERENCES TO CRITICAL ARTICLES READILY AVAILABLE IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES, AND QUESTIONS FOR CLASS DISCUSSION AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS.
