THIS GUIDE TO EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN THE SCIENCES IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE AND CONVENIENT REFERENCE FOR GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, STUDENTS, SCHOLARS, RESEARCHERS, EDUCATORS, AND ADMINISTRATORS, BRINGING TOGETHER WIDELY SCATTERED INFORMATION THAT HITHERTO HAS BEEN DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN. CHAPTER 1 DEALS EXCLUSIVELY WITH NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) PROGRAMS--PARTICULARLY WITH (1) PRE-COLLEGE EDUCATION IN SCIENCE, (2) UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION IN SCIENCE, AND (3) GRADUATE EDUCATION IN SCIENCE. CHAPTER 2 DESCRIBES PROGRAMS JOINTLY SPONSORED BY THE NSF AND THE ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION (AEC) WHICH PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES IN NUCLEAR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS FOR PROSPECTIVE COLLEGE TEACHERS ARE DISCUSSED IN CHAPTER 3, WHICH DEALS WITH THOSE PROGRAMS SUPPORTED BY GRANTS THROUGH THE NATIONAL DEFENSE EDUCATION ACT OF 1958 ADMINISTERED BY THE U.S. OFFICE OF EDUCATION. PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS ARE LISTED. PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE AWARDS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. OPPORTUNITIES IN SPACE SCIENCE, LARGELY UNDER THE SPONSORSHIP OF THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA) ARE PRESENTED IN CHAPTER 4. DISCUSSED IN CHAPTER 5 ARE MANY POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATESHIPS, WHICH ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES THROUGH ITS NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. CIVIL SERVICE AND ARMED FORCES PROGRAMS ARE DESCRIBED IN CHAPTER 6, PRIVATE FOUNDATION PROGRAMS IN CHAPTER 7, PRIVATE INDUSTRY PROGRAMS IN CHAPTER 8, AND THE PROGRAMS OF THE PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES IN CHAPTER 9. IN EACH INSTANCE THE AMOUNT OF SUPPORT, THE CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY, AND APPLICATION INFORMATION ARE GIVEN. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PURPOSE OF THE GRANT, THE NUMBER AWARDED, AND THE SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS ARE DISCUSSED ALSO.
