A TECHNIQUE FOR DETERMINING THE OPERATING CAPACITIES OF JUNIOR COLLEGE INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITIES.
CLAWSON, KENNETH TED
A TECHNIQUE FOR DETERMINING THE CAPACITY OF A COLLEGE PLANT SHOULD (1) CONSIDER THE FUNCTIONAL USE OF THE PLANT, (2) ATTACK THE CAPACITY PROBLEM DIRECTLY RATHER THAN THROUGH STATUS STUDIES, (3) INVOLVE THE SIGNIFICANT FACTORS RELATED TO CAPACITY, (4) USE OBJECTIVE FACTORS, (5) BE UNIVERSAL IN ITS APPLICATION, (6) NOT INVOLVE ABSTRACT STANDARDS, (7) BE RELATIVELY EASY TO APPLY, AND (8) PROVIDE EASILY INTERPRETED RESULTS. A FORMULA MEETING THESE CRITERIA WAS DEVELOPED TO PREDICT CAMPUS CAPACITY FROM THE AVERAGE TOTAL ENROLLMENT IN THE COLLEGE FOR A 3-YEAR PERIOD PLUS THE FOLLOWING DATA FOR EACH TYPE OF FACILITY--(1) NUMBER OF TEACHING STATIONS, (2) DESIRABLE AVERAGE CLASS SIZE, (3) AND EFFECTIVE PERIODS PER WEEK. METHODS OF COLLECTING THE BASIC INFORMATION AND OF APPLYING IT TO THE FORMULA ARE DESCRIBED, AND FIVE EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION OF THE PROCESS ARE PROVIDED. THIS PH.D. DISSERTATION IS AVAILABLE AS DOCUMENT NO. 65-5571, FOR $2.75 (MICROFILM) OR $8.60 (XEROGRAPHIC COPY) FROM UNIVERSITY MICROFILMS, INC., 313 NORTH FIRST STREET, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN 48107. (WO)
