TOWARD A SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF EMPATHY.
GUIORA, ALEXANDER Z.
IN EARLIER REPORTS IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT THERE ARE AT LEAST THREE DISTINCT MODES OF COMPREHENDING--INFERENCE, EMPATHY, AND INTUITION. IT WAS CONTENDED THAT THESE PROCESSES CAN BE SEPARATED, IDENTIFIED AND RENDERED RESEARCHABLE. THIS REPORT CONSIDERS THE POSSIBILITIES OF RESEARCH IN EMPATHY WHEN IT IS OPERATIONALIZED IN TERMS OF LANGUAGE BEHAVIOR. A SERIES OF STUDIES IS REPORTED AND IT IS SUBMITTED THAT OPERATIONALIZING THE CONCEPT OF EMPATHY IN TERMS OF BEHAVIOR OUTSIDE OF THE CLINICAL REALM PROVIDES A HIGH DEGREE OF CONSTRUCT VALIDITY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, POINTS TO A BROADENING AREA OF RESEARCH POSSIBILITIES HITHERTO NEGLECTED. THIS PAPER IS REPRINTED BY PERMISSION OF "COMPREHENSIVE PSYCHIATRY," GRUNE AND STRATTON, PUBLISHERS, AND APPEARS ALSO IN "STUDIES IN LANGUAGE AND LANGUAGE BEHAVIOR, PROGRESS REPORT V," SEPTEMBER 1, 1967, PUBLISHED BY THE CENTER FOR RESEARCH ON LANGUAGE AND LANGUAGE BEHAVIOR, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, 220 EAST HURON STREET, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN 48108.
