PROMPTING VS FEEDBACK IN TRAINING AUDITORY JUDGMENTS OF VARYING DIFFICULTY.
AIKEN, E.G.
TWO PROCEDURES FOR TRAINING ENLISTED MEN WERE COMPARED FOR THEIR EFFICIENCY IN TRAINING TWO AUDITORY JUDGMENTS. PROMPTING INVOLVED PRESENTATION OF THE CORRECT ANSWER BEFORE THE PRESENTATION OF THE STIMULUS. FEEDBACK INVOLVED PRESENTATION OF THE CORRECT ANSWER AFTER THE MEN HAD JUDGED THE STIMULUS. RESULTS INDICATE (1) A SUBSTANTIAL TREND TOWARD THE SUPERIORITY OF FEEDBACK IN IMPROVING PITCH DISCRIMINATION AT TWO LEVELS OF DIFFICULTY, (2) A TREND TOWARD SUPERIORITY OF PROMPTING IN THE TRAINING OF PITCH AND INTENSITY IDENTIFICATION, AND (3) A SUBSTANTIAL TREND TOWARD GREATER TRANSFER TO A DOPPLER DISCRIMINATION PROBLEM AFTER AUDITORY IDENTIFICATION AS OPPOSED TO AUDITORY DISCRIMINATION TRAINING. RECOMMENDATIONS WERE MADE CONCERNING THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE DATA FOR NAVY TRAINING AND FUTURE RESEARCH. (THE DOCUMENT INCLUDES A CHART AND 15 REFERENCES.) IT IS AVAILABLE, AS AD-639-225, FROM THE CLEARINGHOUSE FOR FEDERAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION, SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA 22151. MICROFICHE $.65. HARDCOPY $3.00. 20 PAGES. (AUTHOR/LY)
