THIS GUIDE IS FOR TEACHER AND ADMINISTRATOR USE IN INITIATING POST-SECONDARY TRAINING PROGRAMS IN CHILD CARE AND GUIDANCE. THE 2-YEAR PROGRAM PREPARES PERSONS TO SERVE AS TEACHER ASSISTANTS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF QUALIFIED TEACHERS IN DAY CARE CENTERS, NURSERY SCHOOLS, KINDERGARTENS, AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTERS. THE PURPOSES OF THE PROGRAM ARE TO (1) AID VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN TRAINING PERSONS TO WORK WITH YOUNG CHILDREN, (2) TRAIN PERSONS FOR EMPLOYMENT, (3) HELP TRAINEES DEVELOP A SENSE OF ADEQUACY AND BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THEMSELVES AND OTHERS, (4) ORIENT PERSONS TO THE JOBS AVAILABLE IN CHILD CARE AND GUIDANCE, (5) DEMONSTRATE HIGH QUALITY TRAINING AND EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPETENT PERSONNEL IN ALL AREAS OF CHILD CARE AND GUIDANCE, (6) PROPOSE A 2-YEAR TRAINING PROGRAM OR, WITH ADAPTATIONS, A COURSE OF SHORTER DURATION, INCLUDING INSERVICE TRAINING FOR ONGOING PROGRAMS. INFORMATION IS GIVEN FOR PROGRAM OBJECTIVES, ADVISORY COMMITTEES, ADMINISTRATIVE CONSIDERATIONS, FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT, THE STAFF, THE STUDENTS, THE CURRICULUM, STUDENT PARTICIPATION EXPERIENCES, ESTABLISHMENT OF A LABORATORY NURSERY SCHOOL, EVALUATION OF STUDENT PROGRESS, AND PLACEMENT AND FOLLOWUP. AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY AND SOURCES OF FILMS, PAMPHLETS, AND PERIODICALS ARE INCLUDED. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS SUGGESTED COURSE OUTLINES, SAMPLE QUESTIONNAIRES FOR FORMER STUDENTS, LISTS OF INEXPENSIVE MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT, A GLOSSARY, AND ESTIMATES OF PROGRAM COSTS.
