ACTION FOR PROGRESS, AN OFFICE OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY ANTIPOVERTY PROGRAM, CONDUCTED A DEMOGRAPHIC SURVEY OF A 6-BLOCK SLUM AREA IN NEW YORK CITY'S LOWER EAST SIDE. DATA WERE GATHERED ON HOUSING, INCOME, EMPLOYMENT, SCHOOLING, HEALTH, RECREATION, CONSUMER PRACTICES, AND COMMUNITY AFFAIRS. THE AIMS OF THE SURVEY WERE TO DELINEATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SLUM AREA. INTERVIEWERS WHO CONDUCTED THE SURVEY REFERRED THE PROBLEMS REQUIRING ACTION TO APPROPRIATE SPECIALISTS. A SERIES OF TABLES AND BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS PRESENTS DATA ON FAMILY STATUS, ETHNICITY, SOURCE OF INCOME, HOUSING AND RENTALS, EMPLOYMENT, SCHOOL COMPLETION, HOUSEHOLD SIZE, AND EXPRESSION OF INTEREST IN NEW HOUSING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
