MEASURING THE READABILITY OF HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPERS.

TO ASCERTAIN HOW READABLE HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPERS ARE, 100 PAPERS RANDOMLY SELECTED FROM THOSE SUBMITTED TO THE 1965 QUILL AND SCROLL CRITICAL SERVICE WERE ANALYZED BY THE FLESCH "READING EASE" FORMULA. FIFTY OF THESE NEWSPAPERS HAD RECEIVED AN "A" (THE HIGHEST CRITICAL SERVICE RATING) AND 50 HAD RECEIVED A "C" (THE THIRD-LEVEL RATING). SIX ISSUES OF EACH PAPER--THREE FROM EACH SEMESTER--WERE ANALYZED SEPARATELY AND COMPARED IN THE CATEGORIES OF NEWS, EDITORIALS, FEATURES, AND SPORTS NEWS. RESULTS OF THE STUDY INDICATED THAT (1) THE STUDENT NEWSPAPERS AVERAGED A READING LEVEL WHICH IS EASILY COMPREHENSIBLE FOR READERS WITH "SOME" HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION, BUT WERE LESS READABLE THAN MANY DAILY COMMERCIAL NEWSPAPERS, (2) "A" NEWSPAPERS TENDED TO BE SOMEWHAT LOWER IN READABILITY THAN"C" PAPERS, ALTHOUGH THESE SCORES WERE NOT RELATED SIGNIFICANTLY TO CRITICAL SERVICE POINT-SCORES, (3) THERE WAS NO TENDENCY FOR IMPROVEMENT IN READABILITY BETWEEN THE FIRST- AND THE SECOND-SEMESTER ISSUES, AND (4) "NEWS" WAS THE LEAST READABLE CATEGORY ANALYZED. IT WAS ALSO DISCOVERED THAT SUCH READABILITY ANALYSIS CAN BE MADE QUICKLY AND RELIABLY USING THE "READING EASE" FORMULA, DESPITE THE INEXPERIENCE OF ANALYSTS.
