REPORTED IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS COURSES PROPERLY REFLECTING THE MATHEMATICAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS IN THE RAPIDLY DEVELOPING ENGINEERING, PHYSICAL, AND SOCIAL SCIENCES. THE PURPOSE OF THIS UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM IS TO PERMIT STUDENTS TO DEVELOP AND NURTURE INTERESTS IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS AT AN EARLY STAGE SO THAT SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN THE NUMBER AND QUALITY OF APPLIED MATHEMATICIANS WOULD RESULT. THE PROGRAM DESCRIBED IS PRE-GRADUATE, IN THE SENSE THAT ITS GOAL IS TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR GRADUATE WORK IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS.
