CRITICAL ABSTRACTS.
AMMINGER, OTTILIE; JUHASZ, STEPHEN
A BRIEF HISTORY OF CRITICAL ABSTRACTS OPENS THIS PAPER, FOLLOWED BY AN ANALYSIS OF THE MEANING OF THE WORDS "CRITICAL,""EVALUATIVE,""ABSTRACT," AND "REVIEW." AFTER DISCUSSING ONE OF THE PRIMARY PURPOSES OF CRITICAL ABSTRACTS, HELP TO SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL PERSONNEL IN MAKING DECISIONS ABOUT PUBLICATIONS TO OBTAIN, THE MEDIA OF THESE ABSTRACTS IS OUTLINED AND THEIR ORGANIZATION IS EXAMINED. THE EDITORIAL OPERATION OF A CRITICAL ABSTRACT JOURNAL SUCH AS "APPLIED MECHANICS REVIEWS" IS DESCRIBED, GIVING DETAILS ON SCANNING TECHNICAL MAGAZINES AND USING THE VOLUNTARY HELP OF EXPERT ABSTRACTORS IN MANY COUNTRIES. EVEN WITH EXTENSIVE USE OF DATA PROCESSING AND COMPUTERS IN THE FUTURE, THE CRITICAL ABSTRACTOR (REVIEWER) WILL REMAIN THE KEY OF THE OPERATION, BUT THE TIME LAG WILL BE RADICALLY REDUCED. READER INVITATION, MOTIVATION, ASSIGNMENT, AND THE EVALUATION OF THE ABSTRACTS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED, AND IT IS FELT THAT CRITICAL ABSTRACTS HAVE AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN CURBING THE UNNECESSARY PART OF THE INFORMATION EXPLOSION. THIS IS A TRANSCRIPT OF A PAPER PRESENTED AT AN INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL (7TH, AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, 1965) AND IS AVAILABLE AS AD-631-624 FROM THE CLEARINGHOUSE FOR FEDERAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION, SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA 22151, $3.00 FOR HARD COPY, $0.65 FOR MICROFICHE, 23 PAGES.
