SPIRES (STANFORD PHYSICS INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM). ANNUAL REPORT.
PARKER, EDWIN B.
SPIRES WAS PLANNED AS A FIVE-YEAR EFFORT TO DEVELOP AND STUDY AN EXPERIMENTAL SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING FOR THE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION NEEDS OF PHYSICISTS AT STANFORD. THERE ARE TWO COMPONENTS TO THE SPIRES PROJECT. ONE IS TO STUDY THE INFORMATION NEEDS AND INFORMATION-SEEKING BEHAVIOR OF A USER POPULATION OF ABOUT 100 HIGH- ENERGY PHYSICISTS. DETAILS OF INTERVIEWS AND QUESTIONNAIRE STUDIES CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE WHAT INFORMATION NEEDS A REPRESENTATIVE GROUP OF THOSE SCIENTISTS HAD AND WHAT INFORMATION SOURCES OF WHICH THEY WERE AWARE ARE PRESENTED. THE SECOND (AND MAJOR) COMPONENT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ON-LINE INTERACTIVE REFERENCE SYSTEM. DETAILED PLANS WERE DRAWN FOR SUCH A SYSTEM AND A SMALL DEMONSTRATION SYSTEM UTILIZING A CATHODE RAY TUBE DISPLAY CONSOLE HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED. THE RETRIEVAL DEMONSTRATION WHICH IS PRESENTED REPRESENTS THE FIRST MAJOR SEGMENT OF THE FIRST VERSION OF THE PROPOSED SYSTEM. FIVE FEATURES CHARACTERIZE THE SPIRES PROJECT AND DISTINGUISH IT FROM OTHER ON-LINE PROJECTS. (1) THERE IS A STRONG BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE RESEARCH EMPHASIS. (2) TEH DATA BASE TO BE USED IN THE SYSTEM IS TO BE RESPONSIVE TO USER NEEDS AND PRIORITIES. FULL ADVANTAGE IS TO BE TAKEN OF WHATEVER DATA BASES ARE AVAILABLE IN MACHINE READABLE FORM. (3) IT IS FOCUSSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTER SYSTEMS SOFTWARE AND APPLICATIONS PROGRAMMING. (4) NO LOCAL MANUAL INDEXING IS DONE. (5) A LIASON HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED WITH LIBRARY OPERATIONS AND LIBRARY AUTOMATION PROJECTS AT THE STANFORD LIBRARIES.
