THE ROLE OF SEARCHING SERVICES IN AN ACQUISITIONS PROGRAM.
LUECK, ANTOINETTE L.; AND OTHERS
A USER PRESENTS HIS POINT OF VIEW ON LITERATURE SEARCHING THROUGH THE MAJOR SEARCHING SERVICES IN THE OVERALL PROGRAM OF ACQUISITIONS FOR THE ENGINEERING STAFF OF THE AIR FORCE AERO PROPULSION LABORATORY. THESE MAJOR SEARCHING SERVICES INCLUDE THE DEFENSE DOCUMENTATION CENTER (DDC), THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA), THE SCIENCE INFORMATION EXCHANGE (SIE), AND THE NATIONAL REFERRAL CENTER (NRC). PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED WITHIN THE LABORATORY FOR UTILIZING THESE SEARCHING SERVICES. THIS INCLUDES WRITING AND SUBMITTING THE REQUESTS FOR RETROSPECTIVE LITERATURE SEARCHES AND INTEREST PROFILES FOR CURRENT AWARENESS SERVICES AS WELL AS PROCEDURES FOR THE SUBSEQUENT ACQUISITION OF DOCUMENTS AND MATERIALS CITED IN THE SEARCH RETURNS. THE RELATIVE VALUE OF THE RETURNS FROM THESE SEARCHING SERVICES IS DESCRIBED, WITH THE VALUE DETERMINED BY THE COMPLETENESS, RESPONSE TIME, FORMAT, ACCURACY, AND AVAILABILITY OF CITED INFORMATION. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE DDC AND NASA INFORMATION SERVICES ARE BOTH INDISPENSABLE TO THE LABORATORY, AND THE OTHER CENTERS SUPPLEMENT THE RETURNS FROM THESE SERVICES. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE SPECIAL LIBRARIES ASSOCIATION (58TH, NEW YORK, MAY 28-JUNE 1, 1967) AND IS AVAILABLE AS AD-652-737 FROM THE CLEARINGHOUSE FOR FEDERAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION, SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA 22151, $3.00 FOR HARD COPY, $0.65 FOR MICROFICHE, 9 PAGES.
