SURVEY OF PRACTICAL TRAINING IN INFORMATION SCIENCE.
BRACKEN, MARILYN C.; SCHILLING, CHARLES W.
THE SURVEY OF PRACTICAL TRAINING INDICATED THE NEED FOR TRAINED PERSONNEL IN THE FIELD OF INFORMATION SCIENCE. MANY ORGANIZATIONS HAVE FOUND PRACTICAL TRAINING TO BE A SATISFACTORY METHOD FOR FULFILLING THE DEMAND FOR TRAINED PERSONNEL. OTHER GROUPS INDICATE THAT THEIR PLANS FOR TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE STILL IN THE DEVELOPMENT STAGE. THE UNIVERSITIES HAVE FOUND THAT THEIR STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE WHETHER IT BE AS A PART OF THE REQUIRED UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM OR AS A PART-TIME STUDENT WORKING OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY. AT THIS TIME MANY PROGRAMS ARE JUST BEGINNING TO TAKE SHAPE. GRADUATES OF UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS ARE BEGINNING TO ENTER THE FIELD IN LARGER NUMBERS. HOWEVER, THE NUMBER OF GRADUATES WILL NOT BE SUFFICIENT TO MEET THE DEMAND FOR TRAINED PERSONNEL IN INFORMATION SCIENCE. THE NEED FOR MORE PRACTICAL TRAINING PROGRAMS IS APPARENT AND CERTAINLY IN THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS, THERE WILL BE A MAJOR INCREASE IN THE AVAILABILITY OF PRACTICAL TRAINING PROGRAMS IN INFORMATION SCIENCE. APPENDIXES INCLUDE INFORMATION ON TRAINING PROGRAMS WITHIN AND OUTSIDE UNIVERSITIES AND THE QUESTIONNAIRES USED FOR THE SURVEY. THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE AS PB-174-656 FROM THE CLEARINGHOUSE FOR FEDERAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION. SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA 22151, $3.00 FOR HARD COPY, $0.65 FOR MICROFICHE, 33 PAGES.
