THE EFFECTS OF TEACHERS IN FOUR-YEAR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AS REFERENCE GROUPS FOR TEACHERS IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES.
HAMILL, ROBERT EUGENE
TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF REFERENCE GROUP BEHAVIOR ON THE SUPPORT OF ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS AND TO DISCOVER THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATTITUDES IN SUPPORT OF THE JUNIOR COLLEGE CONCEPT AND ATTITUDES ADOPTING SENIOR-INSTITUTION FACULTY AS PROFESSIONALLY SIGNIFICANT REFERENCE GROUPS, TWO QUESTIONNAIRES WERE SENT TO FULL-TIME FACULTY MEMBERS AT THREE CALIFORNIA JUNIOR COLLEGES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO SSETS OF ATTITUDES IS NEITHER NEGATIVE NOR POSITIVE. THOSE PLACING A HIGH VALUE ON THE JUNIOR COLLEGE CONCEPT DO NOT NECESSARILY REJECT THE 4-YEAR REFERENCE GROUP AS EXPECTED. THE STUDY ALSO EXAMINED THE INFLUENCE OF EIGHT OTHER VARIABLES ON THE RELATIONSHIP. IN ONLY ONE CASE, WHERE TEACHERS WERE COMPARED BY TEACHING ASSIGNMENT (ACADEMIC OR APPLIED), WAS THERE A SIGNIFICANT VARIATION. SEVERAL PREDICTIONS WERE PROVED CORRECT--(1) THOSE WITH ACADEMIC ASSIGNMENTS AND GREATER ACADEMIC PREPARATION, MEN TEACHERS, AND THE DISSATISFIED LEANED TOWARD REFERENCE GROUP ADOPTION, AND (2) TEACHERS OF APPLIED SUBJECTS, WOMEN, AND THOSE WITH FIVE OR MORE YEARS' EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD TENDED TOWARD THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONCEPT. THIS FINDING ON THE GROUPING OF TEACHERS BY ASSIGNMENT DICTATES CAUTION, FOR IT MAY LEAD TO A DIVISION OF THE STAFF ALONG THE LINES OF ACADEMIC AND APPLIED TEACHING FIELDS. THIS ED.D. DISSERTATION IS AVAILABLE FROM UNIVERSITY MICROFILMS, INC., 313 NORTH FIRST STREET, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN 48107. (HH)
