RURAL TELEVISION IN JAPAN. A REPORT ON AN EXPERIMENT IN ADULT EDUCATION. PRESS, FILM AND RADIO IN THE WORLD TODAY.
United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, Paris (France).
THIS REPORT ON UNESCO'S SECOND PILOT PROJECT OF COLLECTIVE VIEWING OF TELEVISION PROGRAMS IN RURAL DISTRICTS DESCRIBES AND ANALYZES THE ORGANIZATION OF TELECLUBS AND THE IMPACT OF THE 13-PROGRAM SERIES, "FARMING VILLAGE IN PROGRESS", VIEWED 30 MINUTES A WEEK FROM JUNE-MARCH, 1957, BY TELECLUB MEMBERS IN 64 TEST VILLAGES IN 26 JAPANESE PREFECTURES. THE REPORT, BASED ON VILLAGE SURVEYS, PRE- AND POST-SERIES QUESTIONNAIRES, AND REPORTS OF TELECLUB LEADERS, DEALS WITH THE PROBLEMS OF MAKING TELEVISION ACCESSIBLE TO THE FARMERS, CHANGING FARMERS' ATTITUDES TOWARD TV AS A SOURCE OF ENTERTAINMENT TO TV AS A SOURCE OF CONSTRUCTIVE INFORMATION, AND GETTING FARMERS TO TAKE COOPERATIVE ACTION ON THE BASIS OF WHAT THEY LEARNED FROM TV AND THE POST-PROGRAM DISCUSSIONS. THE RESULTS, SET FORTH IN A SERIES OF TABLES, SUGGEST THAT THE PROBLEM OF ACCESS COULD BE MET BY COLLECTIVE, I.E. TELECLUB, VIEWING, THE MOST ATTRACTIVE ASPECT OF WHICH PROVES TO BE POST-PROGRAM DISCUSSION. ALSO, THE FARMERS PREFERRED ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATION CONTENT TO OCCUPATIONAL KNOWLEDGE, AND THERE WERE CHANGES IN ATTITUDES TOWARD, DEMAND FOR, AND ACTUAL USE OF EXISTING COMMUNITY FACILITIES AND HOUSEHOLD EQUIPMENT. ALSO INCLUDED IN THE REPORT IS A SUMMARY OF SERIES PROGRAMS. THIS REPORT IS AVAILABLE FRO $3.25 FROM UNESCO, PLACE DE FONTENOY, PARIS-7E, FRANCE. (CG)
