HEALTH OF CHILDREN OF SCHOOL AGE.
LESSER, ARTHUR
A HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE STUDY OF SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMS, THIS REPORT PRESENTS STATISTICS ON (1) THE NATION'S CHILD POPULATION, (2) CHILDREN IN LOW-INCOME FAMILIES, (3) ILLNESSES OF CHILDHOOD, (4) SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES, AND (5) TRENDS IN THE PROVISION OF HEALTH CARE FOR CHILDREN. THE REPORT EMPHASIZES THE GAPS IN CHILD HEALTH SUPERVISION IN PRESCHOOL YEARS AND RESULTING DISPARITY IN SCHOOL READINESS, THE GREAT CROWDING OF URBAN WELL-BABY CLINICS AND HOSPITAL OUT-PATIENT DEPARTMENTS, THE INADEQUATE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF MEDICAL CARE FOR CHILDREN IN MANY LOW INCOME FAMILIES, THE NEED FOR MORE EFFECTIVE CASEFINDING METHODS BECAUSE OF THE SHORTAGE OF PHYSICIANS, AND THE SPECIAL PROBLEMS OF ADOLESCENTS AND THE HANDICAPPED. RECOMMENDATIONS DRAWN FROM THE STUDY INCLUDE (1) EXTENDED PRESCHOOL ATTENTION, (2) ADDITIONAL CHILD HEALTH CLINICS IN CITIES AND RURAL AREAS, (3) NEW SCREENING METHODS, (4) USE OF CLINICS IN TEACHING HOSPITALS, (5) MORE CARE FOR ADOLESCENTS, AND (6) EVALUATION OF VISION AND HEARING TESTS FOR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN. THIS DOCUMENT IS FOR SALE BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF DOCUMENTS, U.S. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE, WASHINGTON, D.C. 20402, FOR $0.25. (DF)
