COMPUTER-BASED SENTENCE-COMPLETION INTERVIEWS.
VELDMAN, DONALD J.
A 36-ITEM SENTENCE-COMPLETION FORM REQUIRING SINGLE WORD RESPONSES WAS ADMINISTERED TO 2,321 COLLEGE FRESHMEN TO OBTAIN NORMATIVE DATA. THE 616 DIFFERENT RESPONSE WORDS USED BY MORE THAN ONE PERCENT OF THE SAMPLE WERE INCORPORATED INTO A COMPUTER PROGRAM WRITTEN FOR A MODIFIED IBM 1401 COMPUTER WITH TYPEWRITER TERMINALS DESIGNED FOR COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION. A SAMPLE OF 12 STUDENT VOLUNTEERS FILLED OUT THE SENTENCE-COMPLETION FORM AND THEN WERE "INTERVIEWED" BY THE COMPUTER PROGRAM. RESULTS CONFIRM THE FEASIBILITY OF THE TECHNIQUE AND VIVIDLY ILLUSTRATE THE VALUE OF A TAILORED INQUIRY, EVEN WHEN IT IS CONDUCTED BY A COMPUTER. THIS ARTICLE IS PUBLISHED IN THE "JOURNAL OF COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY," VOLUME 14, NUMBER 2, MARCH 1967. (AUTHOR)
