HAUGEN, EINAR, ED.; AND OTHERS
THIS PRONOUNCING DICTIONARY IS INTENDED PRIMARILY FOR AMERICANS STUDYING MODERN NORWEGIAN. IT IS THE FIRST DICTIONARY TO INCLUDE BOTH FORMS OF NORWEGIAN, "BOKMAL" ("RIKSMAL," DANO-NORWEGIAN) AND "NYNORSK" ("LANDSMAL," NEW NORWEGIAN) IN ONE ALPHABET, AND THE FIRST NORWEGIAN-ENGLISH DICTIONARY TO INCLUDE NYNORSK. THE BOOK IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS--AN INTRODUCTION AND THE DICTIONARY PROPER. THE INTRODUCTION DISCUSSES THE ENTRY ARRANGEMENT, THE STRUCTURE OF NORWEGIAN, AND THE HISTORY OF THE TWO FORMS OF THE LANGUAGE. THE SECOND PART, THE DICTIONARY PROPER, CONTAINS SUCH INNOVATIONS AS THE INCLUSION OF COMMON ABBREVIATIONS, IMPORTANT PLACE AND PROPER NAMES, AND CULTURAL FEATURES. THIS DICTIONARY, CONTAINING OVER 60,000 ENTRIES, WAS PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES BY THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN PRESS, MADISON, WISCONSIN 53701 ($10.00). (TP)
