SCHARLES, HENRY G., JR.
TO RELATE PERSONALITY NEEDS TO DROPOUT AND ACHIEVEMENT AMONG ADULT LEARNERS, A SAMPLE OF 90 MALES AND 50 FEMALES WAS RANDOMLY DRAWN FROM THE 600 REGISTRANTS IN THE HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA, ADULT EVENING HIGH SCHOOL DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES. THE EDWARDS PERSONAL PREFERENCE SCHEDULE WAS ADMINISTERED TO THE SAMPLE, AND THE DATA WAS TESTED BY MEANS OF THE CHI SQUARE TEST. AMONG DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SAMPLE AND NORM GROUPS WERE THE SAMPLE GROUPS' HIGHER NEED FOR EXHIBITION, INTRACEPTION, AND ABASEMENT, AND LOWER NEED FOR CONSISTENCY. MALE NONDROPOUTS DIFFERED FROM THE DROPOUT GROUP WITH A HIGHER AFFILIATION NEED AND LOWER AUTONOMY NEED AND FEMALE NONDROPOUTS DIFFERED WITH A HIGHER NEED FOR ABASEMENT AND LOWER NEED FOR ACHIEVEMENT. THE MALE HIGH ACHIEVERS WERE HIGHER THAN LOW ACHIEVERS IN THEIR NEED FOR EXHIBITION AND SUCCORANCE, BUT LOWER IN THEIR NEED FOR ACHIEVEMENT, DEFERENCE, INTRACEPTION, DOMINANCE, AND HETEROSEXUALITY, WHILE THE FEMALE HIGH ACHIEVERS DIFFERED FROM LOW ACHIEVERS IN A HIGH NEED FOR CHANGE AND LOWER NEED FOR ABASEMENT.
