IN THIS SURVEY OF THE TRAINING OF ACTIVE DUTY ARMED FORCES, VARIOUS CATEGORIES ARE IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED--TRAINING AND EDUCATION OF ENLISTED MEN (INCLUDING SPECIALISTS AND POTENTIAL NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICERS), OFFICER TRAINING AND SPECIALIZED EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL MILITARY EDUCATION, UNIT TRAINING, AND OFF-DUTY ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION. PROVISIONS FOR BASIC TRAINING, SKILL TRAINING, AND SUPERVISORY EDUCATION ARE DISCUSSED, TOGETHER WITH SKILL AND OCCUPATIONAL STRUCTURES. THEN FOLLOWS A DESCRIPTION OF THE ROLE OF THE VARIOUS COMMISSIONING PROGRAMS, SPECIALIZED OFFICER TRAINING, AND HIGH LEVEL EDUCATION AT DEGREE GRANTING INSTITUTIONS, AND ALSO THE EDUCATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE SENIOR SERVICE COLLEGES AND THE OTHER PROFESSIONAL MILITARY SCHOOLS. EXAMPLES OF SPECIAL, WARFARE, AND OTHER TYPES OF UNIT TRAINING ARE GIVEN. THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES INSTITUTE CORRESPONDENCE PLAN, UNIVERSITY STUDY, AND EDUCATION OF DEPENDENTS ARE DEALT WITH UNDER THE HEADING OF OFF-DUTY EDUCATION. THE DOCUMENT IS CONCLUDED WITH AN ANALYSIS OF PERSONNEL RETENTION AND OTHER MAJOR PROBLEMS. THERE ARE ILLUSTRATIONS AND REFERENCES.
