COMMENTS AND CURRICULA RELATED TO THIRD GENERATION DATA PROCESSING AND SPECIFICALLY IBM SYSTEM/360.
CLARK, JOHN R.; TILTON, THEODORE
TWO INSTRUCTORS ATTENDED CLASSES AT THE IBM EDUCATION CENTER TO FIND OUT HOW THE COURSES IN THIRD-GENERATION COMPUTER HARDWARE AND OPERATING SYSTEMS SHOULD BE TAUGHT AT THE JUNIOR COLLEGE LEVEL. THEY LEARNED THE TEACHING TECHNIQUES AND WERE ABLE TO SELECT THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR THE CURRICULUM. THE SUGGESTED 4-SEMESTER PROGRAM CONTAINS AN INTRODUCTION TO DATA PROCESSING, A STUDY OF THE REPORT PROGRAM GENERATOR, PROCEDURAL LANGUAGES (COBOL AND PL/1), AND ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE CODING, WITH LIMITED ELECTIVES (FORTRAN IV AND UNIT RECORD EQUIPMENT), AND A POST-CERTIFICATE COURSE IN ADVANCED SYSTEM OPERATIONS. THE PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH A GENERAL BACKGROUND (EVOLUTION, TERMINOLOGY, AND TECHNIQUES OF DATA PROCESSING) AND ORIENT HIM TO THE MANY FACETS OF THE FIELD. EVEN AT THE END OF THE FIRST YEAR, THE STUDENTS WILL BE EMPLOYABLE, WHILE THOSE WHO COMPLETE THE COURSE WILL HAVE THE CONCEPTS OF GREATEST VALUE TO A PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYER. THE IMPACT OF THIRD-GENERATION COMPUTERS ON EXISTING DATA PROCESSING CURRICULA, PREPARATION FOR THE INEVITABLE FOURTH GENERATION, THE TRAINING OF INSTRUCTORS, AND OTHER PERTINENT TOPICS ARE COVERED. APPENDIXES INCLUDE COURSE OUTLINES AND PROGRAMING EXAMPLES. (HH)
