SPONSORED BY THE ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN STUDENTS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, IT WAS ATTENDED BY 260 STUDENT DELEGATES FROM 140 COLLEGES, AS WELL AS BY 600 GUESTS INCLUDING COLLEGE DEANS, HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, WOMEN PROFESSIONALLY EMPLOYED IN SCIENCE, PERSONNEL MANAGERS, AND HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS. THE OBJECTIVES WERE (1) TO ACQUAINT GIRLS INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGICAL FIELDS WITH THE DIFFICULTIES THEY MAY ENCOUNTER, TO SHOW THEM THAT THESE DIFFICULTIES ARE NOT INSURMOUNTABLE AND THAT THE REWARDS OF SUCH CAREERS ARE HIGH, (2) TO BRING TOGETHER OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS FROM DIVERSE FIELDS IN ORDER TO FOCUS THEIR ATTENTION ON THE PROBLEMS OF WOMEN ENTERING THE SCIENTIFIC PROFESSIONS AND TO DISCOVER SOLUTIONS TO THESE PROBLEMS, AND (3) TO ATTRACT THE FAVORABLE ATTENTION OF INDUSTRY, EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, AND THE PUBLIC AT LARGE TO THE SUCCESSFUL CONTRIBUTIONS OF WOMEN IN THESE FIELDS AND TO THE DESIRABILITY OF DECREASING THE PRESENT BARRIERS TO QUALIFIED WOMEN IN THESE AREAS. THE PROGRAM CONSISTING OF LECTURES AND PANEL DISCUSSIONS COVERED SUCH AREAS AS (1) THE COMMITMENT REQUIRED OF A WOMAN ENTERING A SCIENTIFIC PROFESSION, (2) THE BARRIERS TO THE CAREER CHOICE OF ENGINEERING, MEDICINE, OR SCIENCE AMONG AMERICAN WOMEN, (3) ENHANCING THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, AND THE SOCIAL SCIENCES, (4) THE PRESENT SITUATION OF WOMEN SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS IN INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENT, (5) THE CASE FOR AND AGAINST THE EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN, (6) SELF-EMPLOYMENT, (7) WOMEN ENGINEERS IN INDUSTRY, (8) RETRAINING FOR EMPLOYMENT, (9) GOVERNMENT INTEREST IN THE EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN, AND (10) THE INTERACTIONS OF VARIOUS PROFESSIONAL AND NONPROFESSIONAL GROUPS IN DEFINING AND SOLVING THE PROBLEMS WHICH CONFRONT OUR SOCIETY.
