THE SOUNDS OF ENGLISH AND SPANISH, A SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF THE CONTRASTS BETWEEN THE SOUND SYSTEMS. CONTRASTIVE STRUCTURE SERIES.
BOWEN, J. DONALD; STOCKWELL, ROBERT P.
DESIGNED AS A SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR PROFESSIONALS PREPARING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, PLANNING COURSES, OR DEVELOPING CLASSROOM TECHNIQUES FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAMS, A SERIES OF STUDIES HAS BEEN PREPARED THAT CONTRASTS, IN TWO VOLUMES FOR EACH OF THE FIVE MOST COMMONLY TAUGHT FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN THE UNITED STATES, THE SOUND AND GRAMMATICAL DIFFERENCES OF THESE TARGET LANGUAGES AND ENGLISH. THIS VOLUME ON THE SOUNDS OF SPANISH AND ENGLISH IDENTIFIES THE STRUCTURAL DIFFERENCES RELATED TO PRONUNCIATION BETWEEN ENGLISH AND SPANISH THAT MUST BE CONSIDERED BY THE TEACHER OF SPANISH, WHETHER OR NOT HE IS A NATIVE SPEAKER OF EITHER ENGLISH OR SPANISH. BASED ON A LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS, THE FIRST FOUR CHAPTERS EXAMINE CONFLICTING SOUND SYSTEMS, STRESS, RHYTHM, INTONATION, AND THE ARTICULATION OF CONSONANTS AND VOWELS. THE FOLLOWING THREE CHAPTERS DISCUSS IN DETAIL THE CONSONANT AND VOWEL SYSTEMS AND THE CONSONANT SEQUENCES OF SPANISH AND ENGLISH. A BRIEF SUMMARY OF SEGMENTAL ELEMENTS IS THE FINAL CHAPTER. ALSO INCLUDED ARE AN APPENDIX ON THE TEACHING OF PRONUNCIATION, A GLOSSARY OF TERMS, A LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS AND SYMBOLS, AND A SUPPLEMENT OF DISTINCTIVE-FEATURE SYSTEMS OF ENGLISH AND SPANISH SOUNDS. SEE FL 000 701 FOR THE COMPANION DOCUMENT ON THE CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH AND SPANISH GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES. THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE FOR $2.75 FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS, 5750 ELLIS AVENUE, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 60637. (SS)
