THE GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES OF ENGLISH AND GERMAN, AN ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO LANGUAGES WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PROBLEMS OF GERMAN SYNTAX. CONTRASTIVE STRUCTURE SERIES.
KUFNER, HERBERT L.
DESIGNED AS A SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR PROFESSIONALS PREPARING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, PLANNING COURSES, OR DEVELOPING CLASSROOM TECHNIQUES FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAMS, A SERIES OF STUDIES HAS BEEN PREPARED THAT CONTRASTS, IN TWO VOLUMES FOR EACH OF THE FIVE MOST COMMONLY TAUGHT FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN THE UNITED STATES, THE SOUND AND GRAMMATICAL DIFFERENCES OF THESE TARGET LANGUAGES AND ENGLISH. THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK IS TO ANALYZE THE STRUCTURAL DIFFERENCES FOUND IN ENGLISH AND GERMAN BY PLACING GREATER EMPHASIS ON THE PROBLEM OF GERMAN SYNTAX. AFTER FIRST DEFINING AND CLASSIFYING THE FAVORITE SENTENCE TYPES OF GERMAN, THE VOLUME TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT GERMAN CLAUSE TYPES IN CHAPTER TWO. GOING INTO DETAIL ONLY WHERE AREAS OF CONFLICT IN THE REMARKABLY SIMILAR PHRASE STRUCTURES OF ENGLISH AND GERMAN MIGHT CREATE LEARNING DIFFICULTIES, CHAPTER THREE OUTLINES OBJECTIVE MODIFIERS, AND THE SUBORDINATE, COORDINATE (CONJUNCTION AND APPOSITION), AND CENTERLESS PHRASE STRUCTURES COMMON TO BOTH LANGUAGES. CHAPTER FOUR EXAMINES THE PARTS OF SPEECH TO DETERMINE WHERE DIFFERENCES MIGHT GIVE RISE TO CONFLICTS AND CHAPTER FIVE, IN ITS ATTEMPT TO SHOW VARIANTS BETWEEN THE COMPULSORY GRAMMATICAL CATEGORIES, DISCUSSES WAYS IN WHICH THOSE OF THE NATIVE TONGUE INTERFERE WITH THE ACQUISITION OF A SECOND LANGUAGE. TO HELP THE NATIVE SPEAKER OF ENGLISH OVERCOME HIS MOST FREQUENTLY ENCOUNTERED DIFFICULTY IN ACQUIRING SKILL IN A TARGET LANGUAGE, CHAPTER SIX DESCRIBES THE COMPULSORY SEMANTIC CATEGORIES AND HOW THEY DIFFER. SEE FL 000 691 FOR THE COMPANION DOCUMENT ON THE CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH AND GERMAN SOUNDS. THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE FOR $2.00 FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS, 5750 ELLIS AVENUE, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 60637. (AB)
