DICTIONARY OF RUSSIAN PERSONAL NAMES WITH A GUIDE TO STRESS AND MORPHOLOGY.
BENSON, MORTON
DESIGNED AS A REFERENCE WORK FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS OF RUSSIAN, AND FOR OTHERS INTERESTED IN THE STRESS AND MORPHOLOGY OF RUSSIAN SURNAMES, THE DICTIONARY INCLUDES APPROXIMATELY 23,000 SELECTED SURNAMES TAKEN FROM IMPORTANT PROSE WORKS OF 19TH- AND 20TH-CENTURY RUSSIAN LITERATURE, THE "LARGE SOVIET ENCYCLOPEDIA," AND THE "1960 MOSCOW TELEPHONE BOOK." PREVALENT USAGE AMONG EDUCATED SPEAKERS IS DESCRIBED, AND A SPECIAL SECTION LISTS SURNAMES OF FAMOUS PERSONS IN WHICH THE STRESS DIFFERS FROM THE GENERALLY ACCEPTED ONE. FOR ALL THE SURNAMES, PREVALENT AND VARIANT STRESSES ARE INDICATED AND GENERAL TENDENCIES IN ACCENTUATION ARE DESCRIBED. ALSO INCLUDED ARE THE DECLENSION OF THE SURNAMES AND THEIR STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DECLENSION. THE BASIC DIMINUTIVE FORMS OF MOST FREQUENTLY USED RUSSIAN NAMES ARE LISTED WITH AN ANALYSIS OF THE FORMATION OF THE DIMINUTIVES. AS A PRACTICAL AID, INFORMATION IS PROVIDED WHICH MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO RECONSTRUCT THE ORIGINAL CYRILLIC SPELLING OF A NAME ENCOUNTERED IN THE POPULAR ENGLISH TRANSLITERATION. THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE FOR $4.75 FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA PRESS, PHILADELPHIA, PENNA. 19104. (AF)
