HORNE, ELINOR C.; AND OTHERS
THE PURPOSE OF THIS TEXT IS TO PRESENT TO THE INTERMEDIATE STUDENT OF JAVANESE A VARIETY OF MATERIAL ILLUSTRATING THE WRITTEN AND SPOKEN LANGUAGE AS IT IS ACTUALLY USED IN JAVA. THIS TEXT IS THE SEQUEL TO "BEGINNING JAVANESE" (YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1961) AND IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE STUDENT HAS A FULL GRASP OF THE VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR PRESENTED THERE. THE MATERIAL IN THIS VOLUME CONSISTS OF 15 CONVERSATIONAL UNITS (PART I) AND 15 UNITS OF PROSE PASSAGES (PART II). THROUGHOUT THE BOOK THE STUDENT IS DRILLED ON THE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE PATTERNS FOR DIFFERENT SOCIAL SITUATIONS. CAREFUL STUDY OF THE MATERIAL IN THESE 30 UNITS SHOULD ENABLE AN AMERICAN TO UNDERSTAND AND MAKE HIMSELF UNDERSTOOD IN JAVANESE. EACH LESSON CONSISTS OF TWO SECTIONS--(1) AN ANNOTATED TEXT WRITTEN IN CONVENTIONAL JAVANESE SPELLING AND IN PHONEMIC TRANSCRIPTION, AND (2) EXERCISES BASED ON THIS TEXT. THE EXERCISES FOR EACH UNIT INCLUDE COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS IN JAVANESE, PRONUNCIATION EXERCISES, PATTERN DRILLS, WRITING AND SPELLING EXERCISES, AND SUGGESTIONS FOR ORAL PRACTICE. ALTHOUGH MOST SUITABLE FOR CLASSWORK WITH A NATIVE JAVANESE TEACHER, THE TEXT MAY ALSO BE USED INDEPENDENTLY. APPENDED TO THE LESSONS ARE A JAVANESE-ENGLISH GLOSSARY AND AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE TEXTS. THIS 505-PAGE BOOK IS AVAILABLE FROM THE YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 149 YORK STREET, NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT 06511 FOR $5.00. (JD)
