THIS REPORT BY AN INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION SUMMARIZES AN ASSESSMENT OF MATHEMATICAL ACHIEVEMENT IN TWELVE COUNTRIES. THE STUDY WAS DESIGNED TO TEST HYPOTHESES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF COMPARATIVE EDUCATION. MANY OF THE PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY ARE EXPLAINED, AND INTERPRETATIONS AND GENERALIZATIONS ARE TEMPERED WITH CAUTION. IN THE SECTION ON FURTHER RESEARCH, PLANS FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE INTERNATIONAL PROJECT FOR THE EVALUATION OF EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT (IEA) ARE DISCUSSED IN THE LIGHT OF INSIGHTS GAINED IN THE MATHEMATICS PHASE. CHAPTERS OF THE REPORT DEAL WITH (1) MATHEMATICS TESTS AND ATTITUDE INVENTORY SCORES, (2) CORRELATIONS BETWEEN COUNTRIES, (3) THE RELATION OF SCHOOL ORGANIZATION TO ATTAINMENT IN MATHEMATICS, (4) PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS, (5) THE SOCIAL FACTORS IN EDUCATION, (6) REGRESSION ANALYSIS, AND (7) A SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS. IN ADDITION TO THE OTHER DATA, THE APPENDIXES CONTAIN THE MATHEMATICS TEST AND STATISTICS FOR EACH ITEM.
