BEGINNING TAGALOG, A COURSE FOR SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH.
BOWEN, J. DONALD; AND OTHERS
THE TWO MAJOR GOALS OF THIS COMPREHENSIVE COURSE ARE--FIRST, AN ORAL CONTROL OF TAGALOG AND SUFFICIENT MASTERY OF ITS STRUCTURE TO CONTINUE INDEPENDENT STUDY, AND SECOND, PRESENTATION OF UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SOCIAL CUSTOMS, STANDARDS, VALUES, AND ASPIRATIONS OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE SO THAT THE LANGUAGE LEARNER MAY PARTICIPATE FULLY IN FILIPINO SOCIETY. WITH FAIRLY INTENSIVE CLASS SCHEDULING AND ASSUMING LABORATORY AND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS, THE 25 UNITS CAN BE COVERED IN ONE YEAR. EACH UNIT INCLUDES--(1) A BASIC DIALOG TO BE MEMORIZED, (2) BRIEF CULTURAL AND STRUCTURAL EXPLANATIONS TO BE READ OUTSIDE OF CLASS, (3) PRONUNCIATION EXERCISES BASED ON A CONTRASTIVE STUDY OF TAGALOG AND ENGLISH, (4) A "DRILLS AND GRAMMAR" SECTION WHERE INDIVIDUAL GRAMMAR POINTS ARE PRESENTED AND INTENSIVELY DRILLED, AND (5) CUMULATIVE, VISUAL-CUE, AND COMPREHENSION-RESPONSE DRILLS. THE READINGS, WHICH ARE TO START WITH UNIT XII, APPEAR IN A SEPARATE VOLUME, "INTERMEDIATE READINGS IN TAGALOG." THE OTHER VOLUMES PRODUCED IN THIS MATERIALS PROJECT ARE A REFERENCE GRAMMAR AND A TAGALOG/ENGLISH-ENGLISH/TAGALOG STUDENT DICTIONARY. COMPLETE TAPE RECORDINGS FOR THE DIALOGS, DRILLS, AND READINGS HAVE BEEN PREPARED AS WELL. THIS TEXT IS PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA PRESS, 233 FULTON STREET, BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA 94720 ($6.00). (JD)
