THE PURSUIT OF PROMISE, A STUDY OF THE INTELLECTUALLY SUPERIOR CHILD IN A SOCIALLY DEPRIVED AREA.
MCCABE, ALICE R.; AND OTHERS
REPORTED IS AN INTENSIVE 2-YEAR DEMONSTRATION PROJECT CONDUCTED IN EAST HARLEM BY NEW YORK'S COMMUNITY SERVICE SOCIETY TO EXAMINE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF INTELLECTUALLY SUPERIOR DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES, AND TO TEST THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A DEMONSTRATION SERVICE PROGRAM EMPLOYING GROUP METHODS IN ENCOURAGING THE ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL FUNCTIONING OF THESE CHILDREN. SEVERAL CHAPTERS DESCRIBE THE SETTING AND ORGANIZATION OF THE PROJECT, WHAT WAS LEARNED ABOUT THE CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES, HOW THEY WERE INVOLVED IN THE RESEARCH AND DEMONSTRATION PHASES OF THE PROJECT, AND HOW THE SERVICE PROGRAM WAS CONDUCTED AND WHAT RESULTED FROM THIS INTERVENTION. THE SAMPLE POPULATION OF 80 NEGRO AND PUERTO RICAN CHILDREN IN GRADES TWO TO FOUR WERE RANDOMLY PLACED IN EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL GROUPS. AFTER THE ALLOTED TWO YEARS, THE READING SKILL OF BOTH THE NEGRO AND PUERTO RICAN EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS "MARKEDLY" INCREASED COMPARED WITH THEIR RESPECTIVE CONTROL GROUPS, ALTHOUGH THE INFLUENCE OF THE EXPERIMENTAL SERVICE PROGRAM IN AFFECTING OTHER AREAS WAS LESS CONCLUSIVE. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR TEACHER ORIENTATION, PARENT PROGRAMS, HOME-SCHOOL INTERACTION, AND FURTHER PROGRAMS FOR THE INTELLECTUALLY SUPERIOR DISADVANTAGED CHILD. EXTENSIVE TABLES SUMMARIZE THE DATA IN THE REPORT. THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE FROM THE COMMUNITY SERVICE SOCIETY OF NEW YORK, 105 EAST 22 STREET, NEW YORK, NEW YORK 10018, 314 PAGES. (LB)
